Good news everybody. W3C, the web standards organisation, held its first developer conference earlier this month.
If you weren’t there, don’t fret – Microsoft was one of the sponsors and recorded no less than 22 presentations in full – so you can put your feet up and watch at your leisure on the conference website (wow, that would be longer than a marathon Star Wars session).
Anyway, here are some of the highlights:
- HTML5 – Best of the web. A great presentation from Microsoft’s Giorgio Sardo highlight some of the best HTML5 sites out there today. This is a must-watch video.
- Building web sites for different screen sizes. With websites appearing on tablets, TVs and on mobile phones, designers need to think about how to build a site that works for different screen sizes using HTML5. Nokia’s Rajesh Lal covers these challenges in his presentation.
- Making the web faster. Search engines are increasingly using page weight and loading speed as a factor in search engine optimisation. And, of course, faster loading speeds improve user perceptions and satisfaction. So Google’s Arvind Jain’s presentation is very useful. He dissects the page load process and discusses some of the new interfaces that promise improvements.
- Gaming in HTML5. Grant Skinner. He talks about his switch from Flash games development to HTML5. Is it possible to build a cool game on top of HTML5? Yes!
These videos are actually pretty cool, intercut with demos and presentation grabs in HD. Definitely worth watching.
