Any self confessed geek can probably admit to knowing a whole bunch of movie quotes that they can bring out at a moments notice to suit any social situation. These can usually make you come off as either incredibly witty, or cause a circle of social awkwardness to emanate from your person, causing you to not be talked to for the rest of the evening.
We find that line is drawn somewhere between quoting Princess Bride and shouting NI! at anyone who passes by…
We tweeted Ken from GeekDad‘s article on 100 Quotes Every Geek Should Know a few days ago, but we figured it definitely deserved a full article, as it opened up discussion within the Ubelly team…
So here are our top 10 Quotes Every Geek Should Know:
- “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.” – HAL, 2001: A Space Odyssey
This is one of those quotes that pops up at least once a week when you work with computers. I think the most amusing thing is that a large proportion of people haven’t actually seen 2001…
- “Worst. Episode. Ever” – Comic Book Guy, Simpsons
I doubt that the Simpsons knew they were going to create a meme with this relatively throwaway line from a seemingly insignificant character. It’s got to the point that in any instance of anyone having to pass opinion, someone will always pipe up with ‘Worst. [Blah]. Ever.’ To tell you the truth, it never gets old.
- “No. Try not. Do… or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda, The Empire Strike Back
Who knew that we could get such an inspirational quote from a verbally dyspraxic green midget..
- “This… is my BOOMSTICK!” – Ash, Army of Darkness
To narrow the entire lexicon of ace Evil Dead quotes is quite difficult. Bruce Campbell is still a cult figure thanks to the brilliantly ridiculous one liners that he comes out with, but it’s Army of Darkness that stands above the others. With lines like ‘Gimme some sugar, baby,’ ‘Honey, you got reeeal ugly!’ and ‘Good. Bad. I’m the guy with the gun’ how could the other two films stand a chance? - “Excuse me, I believe you have my stapler…” – Milton, Office Space
Another one that has too many lines to choose from. However, Milton is the one that ultimately sticks in everyone’s mind. Following this up with ‘…I’ll set the building on fire’ is not optional. A close second is the entire photocopier massacre/’Damn it feels good to be a gangsta’ scene for anyone who has ever used a photocopier. Ever. - “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” – Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
There’s a t-shirt. ‘Nuff said.
- “Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time” – French Soldier, Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Any quote from Holy Grail needs to come with a disclaimer, I feel. If you are male, and would like members of the opposite sex to talk to you, don’t quote this movie in their vicinity. Not that I’ve learnt this the hard way…
- “There is no spoon.” – Bendy Spoon Kid, The Matrix
To tell you the truth, I don’t really quote this one that often. I really only included it for the opportunity to include a Sad Keanu. - “Beam me up, Scott” – Captain Kirk, Star Trek
The interesting about this well known phrase, is that it has never actually been uttered in a single Star Trek episode or film. Sure, there has been ‘Beam us up, Scotty’ and ‘Scotty, beam me up’, but never ‘Beam me up, Scotty’. Us? Pedantic?
- “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
I currently have this on a post-it note next to my desk, right underneath this. I think both are fantastic philosophies to live by.
And our future prediction:
“We are Sex Bob-Omb and we are here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff.” – Scott Pilgrim, Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
Because, to be honest, Scott Pilgrim is by far the best geek film we’ve seen since any of the above…
What did we miss? Let us know…

What did you miss? According to the title, about 90 more quotes =)
Haha, I guess I really should read the whole article before commenting =)
