This looks like your average close up Tiger shot, doesn’t it (if such a thing can be labelled ‘average’ of course!)? Well think again – it’s actually a mosaic created from thousands of photographs of endangered species, which is in itself sad and beautiful at the same time.
The tiger was created in Silverlight by Shoothill for conservation group Flora and Fauna, who highlight the plight of one threatened species and habitat each month. This month, to highlight the Chinese Year of the Tiger, the focus is on the Sumatran Tiger. As you Deep Zoom into the image of the tiger you’ll see it’s made up of 180,000 images of all the animals that are facing extinction in the world, which makes it the largest Deep Zoom project to date. As you navigate around the mosaic, you’ll find embedded videos of the wildlife as well as interviews with Stephen Fry, Vice President of Flora and Fauna, to bring added context to the images. For those of you who are interested, the Flora and Fauna site is built using PHP, showing that Silverlight and Deep Zoom are not just for Microsofties ;o).
Take a look for yourself, it’s promoting a great cause.
