3D jQuery Spheres

It’s almost enough to blow your mind (or peg your CPU at least) but over at http://www.devirtuoso.com/ they’ve created a 3D sphere effect in jQuery.

Sphere

The effect is generated with some clever DOM manipulation rather than using the HTML5 <Canvas /> element which means it’s currently x-browser compatible (that said, though the sample works in IE8 the offset is off so you get half a sphere instead).

I don’t think it’s time to throw away all your Silverlight / Flash books just yet but it’s a fascinating experiment and there’s an explanation of the code there to back it up as well as a series of other interesting experiments with jQuery (like the wobbling carousel).
